A rare winter visitor in grasslands and scrub jungles of kerala. The male has a black breast-patch and streaking on flanks, distinctive head pattern of black and white, and cinnamon sides to the neck. female are similar to common quail. Identified from similar looking quails by absence of barring on the primaries. Call is a characteristic high pitched 'whit-whit'
