Looks: Pointed tail. Male grayish above. Brown head with white stripe down sides of neck. White under parts. During flight show white trailing edge to secondaries and grayish underwing. Female buff brown and lacks longer tail pins. Lives: Lakes, Freshwater marshes with vegetation.
തവിട്ടുനിറത്തിലുള്ള കഴുത്തിലെ പാർശ്വങ്ങളിലെ തലഭാഗംവരെ കൂർത്തുനിൽക്കുന്ന വെള്ളവരയും ചാരനിറമാർന്ന പുറവും കൂർത്തവാലും മറ്റു താറാവുകളിൽനിന്ന് ഇവയെ വ്യത്യസ്തമാക്കുന്നു. പറക്കുമ്പോൾ ചിറകിന്റെ പിന്നരികിൽ വെളുപ്പും ദ്വിതീയങ്ങളിൽ ചാരനിറവും ദൃശ്യമാകും. ശുദ്ധജലതടാകങ്ങളിലും ചതുപ്പിലുമാണ് ആവാസം.
